  8. everydayhybridity: I spotted this sign outside a store in Causeway Bay the other day. It coincided with me finishing off the Buaman/Lyon book. It provides a perfect example of the ways contemporary culture animates us by a fear of exclusion. This shop uses a similar trick to that of social networking. It presents itself as appealing, a reflection of our own values. Perhaps a bit narcissistic, but who would not want to be regarded in the terms above? By the same measure the sign is deceitful, as none of the requirements list the chief demand: that of the means to consume. That is arguable the trick, these values are regarded as appealing as they are also modelled and presented as synonymous with the means to consume. This sign also reminded me of John Carpenter’s They Live which has been a cultural trigger for the work of Shepard Fairey. For those not familiar with the film, it speaks of a man who concerned with the spiral of decline in American society stumbles on an alien plot to enslave the human race. The poignant aspect of this film is how media is used as a tool in brainwashing us to ‘obey, consume, marry and reproduce’. With this tongue in cheek juxtaposition, does the homeless.hk sign do anything different? The real trick as Bauman and Lyon would note is that we are not ignorant of this. There is no covert agenda. We can see the machinery and we are so animated by a need not to be excluded we happily submit our freedoms to surveillance, control, and manipulation.

    Το ντεμπούτο album τους, “Verba Time”, έχει αποσπάσει ενθουσιώδεις κριτικές και το κομμάτι “In A Bar” έχει σπάσει ρεκόρ ακροάσεων στο youtube. Οι Tango With Lions επιστρέφουν αυτή την άνοιξη με το δεύτερο πολυαναμενόμενο album τους “A Long Walk”. Με μεγάλο περίπατο μοιάζει η πορεία τους τα τελευταία χρόνια. Το project της Kat (Κατερίνα Παπαχρήστου) ξεκίνησε σαν μια μεταβαλλόμενη ομάδα μουσικών που εξελίχθηκε στη σημερινή σταθερή πλέον σύνθεση του συγκροτήματος που ηχογράφησε το “A Long Walk”.

    Τα 10 τραγούδια του album, με αφετηρία τη σύνθεση και τους στίχους της Kat, ενορχηστρώθηκαν σιγά-σιγά από όλο το συγκρότημα τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, μέσα από διαρκές pre-production και πρόβες. Οι ηχογραφήσεις ξεκίνησαν το καλοκαίρι του 2012 και ολοκληρώθηκαν τον Ιανουάριο του 2013 στο στούντιο SCA από τον Θοδωρή Ζευκιλή.

    Όπως στο “Verba Time” έτσι και εδώ το κάθε τραγούδι είναι και μια μικρή ιστορία, όμως, αυτή τη φορά οι ιστορίες είναι αυτοτελείς, με διαδρομές μέσα σε σκοτεινά όνειρα, νυχτερινά ταξίδια, ηλιόλουστες φαντασιώσεις, αναμνήσεις και ιστορίες αγάπης και αποχωρισμού. Στον μεγάλο περίπατο των Tango with Lions οι γλυκόπικρες μελωδίες και οι ονειρικοί στίχοι συναντούν γεμάτες ενορχηστρώσεις. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι μοναδικό: ατμοσφαιρικός ηλεκτρισμός με σκοτεινά ξεσπάσματα, μυσταγωγικές μελωδίες τρομπονιού, ένα παλιό πιάνο και ένα σκοτεινό και στιβαρό rhythm section, διατηρώντας πάντα την ιδιαίτερη ατμόσφαιρα που πλανάται γύρω από τη φωνή της Kat.

    Το “A Long Walk” κυκλοφορεί σε cd, βινύλιο και digital album από την Inner Ear.

    Their debut album, “Verba Time”, has received enthusiastic reviews and the song “In A Bar” has broken a record of views on youtube. Tango With Lions return this spring with their highly anticipated second album, “A Long Walk”. Their musical path during the last four years could be compared to a long walk. The project of Kat (Katerina Papachristou) began as a changing group of musicians and has grown to be the stable lineup of the band that recorded “A Long Walk”.

    With the compositions and lyrics of Kat as a starting point, the band took their time to arrange the 10 album songs with continuous pre-production and rehearsals during the last two years. The recordings began in summer 2012 and were completed in January 2013 by Thodoris Zefkilis in SCA studio.

    As in “Verba Time” so here, every song is a small story, but this time the stories are self-contained, with routes through dark dreams, night trips, sunny fantasies, memories and stories of love and separation. In Tango With Lions’ long walk bittersweet melodies and dreamy lyrics encounter rich arrangements. The result is unique: atmospheric electricity with dark outbursts, mystic trombone melodies, an old piano and a dark and solid rhythm section, always maintaining the special atmosphere that hovers around Kat’s voice.

    “A Long Walk” is released in cd, vinyl and digital album from Inner Ear.
